Fee and Currency Settings - Setup

Fee and Currency Settings - Setup

A core strength of the MarginDriver application is the ability to standardize all of your sales data so that all costs are accounted for and all results are displayed in your chosen display currency. The Fee and Currency Settings page is the place where users enter critical information about each of their sales channels in order to make this possible.

Once the user activates a sales channel on the Sales Channels and Integrations page, it will automatically appear on the Fee and Currency Settings page. The user then needs to enter the following information on the Current Settings tab to ensure accurate results for all MarginDriver reports.

Note on Amazon and Shopify Sales Channels

MarginDriver pulls actual fees for Amazon orders and Shopify orders that are processed through Shopify Payments, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Shop Pay.

This eliminates the need to rely estimates entered in the Credit Card Fee and Sales Channel Selling Fee fields in MarginDriver.

***Please review the Knowledge Base articles on Amazon Fees and Shopify Fees for more articles on MarginDriver's handling of fees on these sales channels.***

Current Settings

  1. Currency. The currency in which the sales channel receives payments. This value is set on the Sales Channel Setup page and represented here for the user's reference.
  1. Today's Conversion Rate. This value is the actual currency conversion rate for the current date. This value is retrieved once a day from currencylayer.com.
  1. Currency Allowance Factor. Merchants typically have to pay processing and/or currency conversion fees in order to transfer their ecommerce proceeds from their foreign payment processor to their business bank account. To account for this cost, MarginDriver allows the user to enter a Currency Allowance Factor which is multiplied by Today's Conversion Rate to arrive at the Effective Currency Rate. For example, if a user typically pays about 3% to transfer their funds to their bank account, entering 0.97 as the Currency Allowance Factor will reduce the Effective Currency Rate by 3% to account for this cost.
  1. Today's Effective Currency Rate. Today's Conversion Rate multiplied by the Currency Allowance Factor. This is the value that is actually applied to the foreign currency values to arrive at results in U.S. dollars.
  1. Credit Card Fee. Merchants typically must pay credit card processing and/or transaction fees when conducting business on non-marketplace websites. The average monthly percentage of total revenue paid in transaction fees should be entered here. This value is applied to the total revenue for each month (and then added to any additional Sales Channel Selling Fees) to arrive at the fees portion of the Total Fees & Allowances value.
  1. Sales Channel Selling Fee. Marketplaces such as Amazon, eBay, Walmart and Jet, among others, charge merchants a fee (sometimes referred to as a referral fee or commission) on all transactions conducted on their platforms. Users should enter the average percentage charged on all sales channel transactions as the Sales Channel Selling Fee. This value is applied to the total revenue for each month (and then added to any additional Credit Card Fees) to arrive at the fees portion of the Total Fees & Allowances total.
  1. Refund & General Allowance. All ecommerce sellers lose a percentage of their profit to customer refunds and returns. MarginDriver users can enter a historical average for each sales channel to properly account for profit lost due to these routine costs.
  1. Total Fees & Allowances. Credit Card Fee plus Sales Channel Selling Fee plus Refund and General Allowance Fee. These three percentage values are added together to arrive at a final Total Fees & Allowances percentage that will be deducted from all gross profit totals for each sales channel.

Any changes made to Current Settings will not be implemented in MarginDriver until midnight of the day the changes are made and saved in Current Settings.

View History

The View History tab provides a daily log of the user's historical fee and currency settings. Users can use the channel selection menu and custom date tool to look back and view the full range of settings for any day in the past on any sales channel.

Edit History

Users also have the ability to edit their historical fee and currency settings should the need arise. This can be particularly useful if the user finds that some values were originally entered erroneously. Historical settings can be changed for dates up to 60 days in the past. Please allow up to 24 hours for the changes to take effect in the MarginDriver reports. Settings for dates more than 60 days in the past cannot be changed in order to preserve the integrity of the user's accounting books, which should have been closed by this time. It is recommended that any accounting changes due to inaccurate fee and currency settings from more than 60 days ago should be made via a general ledger journal entry.
